Week 1 EOC: VW Lemon Ad

It was shocking, to say the least, for an auto brand to call their car a lemon.
What made the ad even more appealing than the shock value, was that the Bug was in fact (and still is) shaped like a lemon. https://www.buzzfeed.com/copyranter/all-the-great-1960s-volkswagen-ads?utm_term=.ps5VKDKvK#.lmxKBjBbB Bernbach is considered the father of the “creative revolution” in the advertisement industry. “All of us who professionally use the mass media are the shapers of society. We can vulgarize that society. We can brutalize it. Or we can help lift it onto a higher level,” Bernbach said, insisting that you first learn how a client’s products related to their targeted audience. Only then did he decide how best to convey those elements in print. The Volkswagen ad campaign was unlike any before it, ushering in an era of modern advertising that truly changed how advertising agencies accomplish their trade. http://www.writingfordesigners.com/?p=1731 Competing automakers were building ever bigger cars for growing families with baby boomer children. The Beetle, on the other hand, was tiny and, well, ugly. Who would buy it? On top of this, the car was manufactured in Wolfsburg, Germany, at a plant built by the Nazis. http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/stories/1999/11/22/smallb7.html The Volkswagen missed the boat. The chrome strip on the glove compartment is blemished and must be replaced. Chances are you wouldn't have noticed it; Inspector Kurt Kroner did. There are 3,389 men of our Wolfsburg factory with only one job; to inspect Volkswagens at each stage of production. (3,00 Volkswagens are produced daily; there are more inspectors than cars.) http://www.powerwriting.com/vw-lemon-ad.html I’m not referring to the citrus fruit, but rather the use of the term lemon in reference to defective cars or other flawed products. We use the term lemon to denote the sour taste in our mouths after making a distasteful deal. http://justinletourneau.blogspot.com/2012/05/lemon.html
